Centrál Budapest

If you ever go to Budapest you have to visit one of the best cafés in town, the Centrál café.

This place has a story which started in 1887, in the middle of the culturally blooming time in Hungary. This café was known as a meeting place of many intellectuals and creative thinkers around the millennium and between the two world wars. It was closed down by the communists in 1949 as they didn't tolerate the creative thinking and especially not a place where "thinkers" could meet, talk and change their thoughts and views. Later on the café was reopened and was used for paprika measuring to a cultural center and students' club and in 1993 the place even become a amusement arcade.
In 1997 the place was saved and restored following many old photos and discovering hidden murals on the wall, a small part of the old tile on the floor and a piece from the original banister.
I think the end result of the restoration is worth having a look and enjoying a piece of cake with a cup of tea or coffee!

Crochet Rug Project

I love crochet rugs! I found this cotton rope one and fell in love with it at first sight! Isn't it pretty (and expensive)? One day I will make my own.
Before that I decided to try to make a crochet rug from fabric. At first I cut up one of our unused bedsheets and made the prototype and now it functions as the nicest bath mat ever. The prototype worked out so well that I didn't stop and decided to throw myself into a bigger project. As I got futher on with the process I thought my 100% handmade crochet rug would make a very nice christmas present (or two)!

And I think I was right. I really like the end result and I'm happy to give my two newly made crochet rugs to their two new owners!

Oh, and the tag! I had to make my own label for the rug because if they prove to be popular, one day I think I could sell them. Any takers?

My favourite place to go for a day-out is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Always good to go for a big walk and explore some of the 60something sculptures arund the park.

It's also worth popping in to see the permanent exhibition which is now Jaume Plensa's spanish artist's fantastic work layed down around the park and the gallery.

Hello Pillow

If I go to a fabric shop I can't help but delve into the "leftoverfabric" box.
I can always find something useful and very cheap to use later and that's how I found this lovely white, thick fabric.
When I needed some cushions for the bed the fabric was close to hand. Using a bit of felt and a bit more imagination I made these pillows:

Upholstery Project

Last week I realised that I could potentially have a career in upholstery. haha

We've were looking for some chairs or armchairs to put in the living room as we had just a sofa so if we had guests either we or they had to sit on a very uncomfortable wooden chair. Our big hunt ended when R. find 2 old armchairs from the 80's at his workplace. He saved them from burning.
The original fabric on the chairs was dusty, filthy and full with holes. It was a job for me I thought! I started my new hunt to find the perfect upholstery fabric. Soon I realised that it was the hardest part in the whole upholstery project. At the end I found this creamy-buttery-white feltish fabric.
Luckily, I could use the original cover to make my pattern. One and a half day cutting, stitching, sewing, pushing, pulling, stapling and the two chairs have been completed, ready for the guests!

I hope you like the end result (because I do).
